Unabridged Blog Tour: Review, Excerpt, & Giveaway

Synopsis

Book Length: 144 pages
Date Published: Aug. 17, 2014
Published by: Melinda De Ross (INDIE)
Steam Rating: Steamy
Main Characters: Angelina & Blade
Ironically, it all starts with a popular book about BDSM. When Angelina Jameson steps into her boss’s office armed with an acid article about ‘Billionaires, BDSM and Blah-blah-blah’, she thinks her career will take off. But her career aspirations drop into second place when she finds herself face to face with her nemesis.

Blade Spencer is the new editor-in-chief of Unabridged—the literary magazine where his ex-lover Angelina works. For three years, since she fled small town Jamestown without a word of explanation, they haven’t heard from one another. Now, when they meet again, the past and all the feelings they once had between them come rushing back, making them realize their love has never died. But can they reconcile their new circumstances and the changes that have occurred during the three years they were apart? Neither is the person the other used to know.

Then there is the faceless shadow who hunts them from the dark, driven by obsession and greed…

*This book contains strong language and explicit descriptions of sex.

“Choice?” His voice rose as the ambiguous surprise on his face faded, once he understood. “You’re talking to me about choices? What choice did you give me, Angelina? We could have worked it out, but you took it upon yourself to make my decisions for me without even telling me. You left me like a coward, letting me think you didn’t love me anymore, letting me drown in misery all these years without a word of explanation! I didn’t even know if you were still alive!”
His booming shout almost rattled the windows, and made me absurdly angry.
“Well, you seemed to have recovered quickly, and enough to take a wife!” I screamed back at him, pushing my face close to his. “And I’ll bet that Allie person wasn’t the only one you’ve slept with during all this time!”
“Oh, you’re always quick to judge! Have you lived like a nun since you left me?”
“Yes!”
The word vibrated in the abrupt, disbelieving silence.
Next thing I knew, his hand grasped the back of my head and his mouth came down hard on mine. His tongue darted deep inside my mouth, forcing my lips to open, as he yanked me to him in a desperate embrace. It didn’t even occur to me to protest. On the contrary. I responded to his kiss with the blind surrender I yearned for. I swept his mouth with my tongue, thrilling in the masculine taste and scent of him. My fingers plowed through his hair, holding his head in place for our stormy, passionate kiss. Our breaths were shallow and loud, mingling together like swirling steam. Even though our clothes were still wet, heat was radiating from our hot bodies.
His hands were everywhere, cupping my face, sliding all over my body, combing through my damp hair. I trailed my tongue over his jaw, then descended down the skin of his throat, grazing my teeth greedily over him, intoxicated by the avalanche of unleashed desire that had gathered up inside me for three years.
I fumbled with the buttons of his clinging wet shirt, then tore them off impatiently to bare his chest to my eyes and touch. He was superbly built, even more gorgeous than I recalled him to be, all subtle muscles delineated by shallow lines that defined his pectorals and abdomen. His chest was dusted with a perfect amount of dark hair.
I tasted the low sound that vibrated in his chest when my mouth closed over his nipple and sucked greedily. When I flicked my tongue over the other, his fist tightened in my hair and he dragged me back to him, kissing me with increasing urgency. His hands slipped under my wet T-shirt, cupping my breasts. They fit so right in his palms and I moaned, overwhelmed by the pleasure of his knowing touch. He slid the T-shirt over my head and took me in his arms. I pushed my body against his, rubbing my breasts against his bare chest, frantic to feel his naked body close to mine. His hardness pushed against my middle and he drew me closer, cupping my bottom with strong hands, as he continued kissing me hungrily.
He lifted his head and I saw his eyes were smoky with arousal, just as mine must have been. His voice sounded rough when he said, “Do you want to go to the bedroom?”
“No,” I whispered, biting his lower lip and dragging him to the floor.
The rug felt soft and cozy beneath my bare back, and I was thrilled by the feel of Blade’s weight on top of me. He kissed my mouth, my neck, then stopped on my breasts, sucking one nipple deep in his mouth, then moving his attention to the other one. I gasped and struggled with the zipper of his pants. When I folded my fingers around his steely length, we both stopped breathing for a moment.
“God, I want you so much, Blade! You can’t imagine how I’ve longed for you all this time,” I said raggedly.
“Yes, I do. I love you, Angelina,” he whispered raspily. “You are and always will be my woman. Sweet and innocent, yet who inspires sin.”
As he looked down at me, his eyes were filled with love and tenderness, and clouded by primal lust. He tugged at my shorts and panties, and I kicked them aside. Then he discarded the rest of his clothes, remaining gloriously naked. I only had one moment to admire his impressive erection, before he stretched above me. Our bodies fit like the halves of a two-pieces puzzle. I quivered in response to the nearness of this monument of raw sexuality.
He sent his tongue deep inside my mouth, just as he slipped inside me. The throbbing pressure made me tense. After three years of abstinence on my side, I think we both relived the loss of my virginity, but this time I was more than ready. The pain of his penetration was brief, but the pleasure was infinite. I arched my hips up to meet his, as he rocked against me, inside me. He was hesitant at first, mindful of hurting me, but as I relaxed under him, his strokes became more powerful, more possessive. He pushed up hard, until I wrapped my legs around his waist and sank my teeth into his shoulder, shaken by a brain-melting orgasm. I think I cried out his name, but the pounding of my heart was so loud in my ears that I couldn’t be sure. When he felt me tensing around him, Blade sank all of himself into me and came, uttering a low, guttural sound, with his face buried in my neck.

Teaser 2Review

This is a second chance romance with a crap ton of humor thrown in for shits and giggles.  Rat the cat was bloody hilarious.  Ahem, so I was writing out the review.  Blade and Angelina are the starring couple of this short, steamy novel.  I’m not going to recap the series here because it’s recapped way up there in the synopsis and I hate being redundant.  Now, about the book!

First off, and I know this has nothing to do with the actual story, but I had to say, I freaking adore the cover.  I mean seriously!  I have no idea who came up with the idea, or guidelines, or whatever, but the artist did an amazing job putting that together!

Secondly, Angelina is freaking hilarious.  She just is, Melinda De Ross can write some serious humor (…oxymoron there), as in, I fell off my bed laughing, knocking my laptop over.  I also laughed out loud while hanging out with my mother watching tv.  She thought I was nuts.  Blade, I thought, was well-rounded for the length of the novel, although he didn’t really stand out to me.  Except for the sex scenes, of course.  But I’ll discuss those later.  In any case, Angelina and the humor actually made the story for me.

Now then, the actual story.  I felt the novel could have been longer and a bit more drawn out.  This plot idea could have been brilliant but it fell a little short of that.  I also had a few issues with dialog being kind of weird.  Not like the characters were supposed to be weird.  Just the dialog didn’t feel natural to me in some places and that made it a tad jarring when reading.  This oddness also prevailed a bit in the actual writing, but the dialog part really stood out.  And the sex scenes were hot and steamy!  Definitely a plus!

Overall, the story kept me engaged and laughing, and of course, with the hot sex scenes, blushing!  (I’m kidding, sex scenes don’t make me blush, they make me very hot as does this book’s cover!)  With Angelina and Rat the cat, I’d give this story 3.5 stars!

Author Bio

Not long ago, to my surprised delight, somebody described me as being “charming, witty, supremely talented and dangerously fun”. I don’t know how accurate this description is, but I’m curious if the readers will find some of these features reflected in my writing. Speaking of my writing, I must mention that living in Romania – which is considered a projection of the enigmatic and much controversial Shambala, the supposed spiritual center of the Earth – is quite a source of inspiration. I have a native inclination to the occult and paranormal, to mystery and philosophy. The woman in me is a romantic and sensual creature. All these considered, I could describe my writing as being captivating, intriguing, sensual in places and, on the whole, a surreal experience. Enjoy!

My name is Tara O’Connell, and I’ve always believed we
control our own fate. That life is a journey with many roads, and the choices
we make can shape our future.
Life has presented me with two paths and I’ve chosen
one.
Was it right? Did I make the best decision?
After the uncertainty of the last twelve months, my
destiny is now crystal-clear to me. I have a man I love more than words can
express, a thriving business, and the best friends anyone could ask for. But
just when I thought I could put the turmoil of my past behind me and move on, a
life-changing phone call has rocked me to the core and turned my life upside-down
once more.
To make matters worse, influences outside my control
have taken hold and are shattering my perfect world.
But some things are worth fighting for.

Dreams can come true and I’ll do everything
in my power to make them happen. But dreams can also be smashed into tiny
pieces, and no matter how hard we fight or how hard we wish for something to
be, sometimes with the hand we’ve been dealt, we can never win.

Selenity Jade’s Rabid Ramblings:

I absolutely freaking love that cover.  Like I’m going to freaking MARRY that cover.  It’s hot, and gorgeous, and I haven’t read the book or anything, but even I think it fits so well.  I just… wow.  I’m almost at a loss to explain exactly how amazing I think that cover is.  In fact, it might be one of my favorite covers of all time.  So gorgeous.  Wow.  Just… wow.

Please, my fellow coffee addicts, tell me:  How do you like that cover?

Review: The Dark Elements Series by Jennifer L. Armentrout

darkelementscovers

I usually try to wait for a few novels of a series to come out before I start them. Mostly, because I am an impatient girl. However, I was in a YA mood after rereading Lux and Covenant series and I do adore JLA, so off I went.

I am so incredibly glad I did. A nice little war between gargoyles – or Wardens as they call themselves – and demons. What could be better? And the main character, a girl who is half-Warden and half-demon and wham, you’re in for some fun. This series is also a YA paranormal romance and I have to say, I was excited to start it.

bittersweetlovecoverBitter Sweet Love (Dark Elements prequel 0.5)

This is the story of Jasmine and Dez, before the start of the main series. You even get to meet the main protagonists in this novel, although they are much younger.

Review:

I think this story is set up as a way of explaining a lot of Warden-type traditions and rules within their mating and romance areas before the main show begins. Or at least that’s how it felt to me. However, the emotions behind each of the main characters here, plus Jasmine’s sister, seemed very real and potent to the reader. It definitely wasn’t a filler read. The world Jennifer L. Armentrout is creating this time is as in-depth as her Lux and Covenant universes and I can’t wait to see where it goes. The prequel didn’t impress me that much though, but I do like Dez and Jasmine well enough. Maybe it was because I knew it was only a prequel to the actual real protagonists of the series which put me off.  I read this one first, so maybe it should be read in another order.  So my rating is 3.5 stars.  Sorry JLArmentrout!

whitehotkisscoverWhite Hot Kiss (Dark Elements 1.0)

Synopsis:

One kiss could be the last.

Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she’s anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.

Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she’s crushed on since forever.

Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she’s not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn’t an issue, considering Roth has no soul.

But when Layla discovers she’s the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne…it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world

Review:

I’m going to go a girly squeal of happiness because I absolutely, completely, totally (yes I am being redundant) LOVE Roth. I just do. He’s great. He’s hot. He pops up out of no where, talks Layla into doing crazy things, and he likes her. What’s not to like about the beginning of this series?

Well okay, I do have one peeve. It’s the age of Roth. JLA explains it and everything within the novel, but honestly… eh, I’d have preferred a more traditional, “he’s been around since demons were created” type story. However, I can overlook that with the awesomeness of this novel.

Firstly, the world JLArmentrout created with the Wardens and demons was nicely done. I have my own theories on them and the Alphas and what exactly is the reasoning behind it, but I won’t share. That would involve spoilers of what was explained in the novel and I honestly try to avoid those in reviews. In the beginning, Wardens equaled the good guys, and demons were all evil. By the end of the novel, you knew not everything was what is seemed, although not nearly enough was explained. Hence, I’m holding my breath for the next novel.

Secondly, the characters are as always diverse and realistic. Layla with her issues of belonging because of her heritage, yet her strength in not giving into most of her self-doubts. Roth, well he’s a little hard to read sometimes, but he’s great. And the fact he hums Guns N Roses makes me grin. (I’m a Guns N Roses fan, it’s my decade, so yeah, I LOVE it!)  Of course, Zayne is a sweetheart, but I was so angry with him in this novel. Layla has it so hard and to go and do some of the absentminded things he did…. Wow. And of course Dez and Jasmine as well as their twins were here, plus Jasmine’s sister. The patriarch of the clan, some dissenters who hate Layla’s very presence, and add in an evil bad-guy hunting for Layla and the action and drama never stop!

Lastly, the story was wonderfully done in that it gave you enough to explain what was going on, yet kept some things from the reader so you have more to learn next time. Nice balancing, that. All in all, 5 stars!

MICHELE WOLFE

Adjusted Headshot

Growing up between the Rocky Mountains and the city of Denver in Colorado, gave me a life-long love of both. I suspect my experiences were similar to others my age in the 70s and 80s; summers in one-piece bathing suits; bicycle riding without a helmet; vacationing in the family station wagon; skiing down the local mountains. I am the youngest of three girls and lucky enough to be supported by friends and a loving extended family.

I loved drama, singing, gymnastics and ice skating. And I was never without a good book, no matter where I went. Soon after finishing college and becoming a teacher, I decided I wanted to explore the world. I took long road trips, spent time at Martha’s Vineyard, and fell in love with the ocean and California, which eventually became my home.

Four years after moving to Los Angeles, I discovered two things that changed my life. My husband was the first. We fell in love hard and fast. Twenty-two years later, we are fully, after a lot of hard work, co-dependent and co-evolved, and very happy about both. The second discovery was a passion for teaching adults English as a Second Language in a poor immigrant community in East L.A. I’m still there, too.

My husband and I have two handsome sons, Caleb Justus and Joshua William. They are our pride and joy. Caleb is in the Army and Joshua is finishing high school. And I should mention our ‘girl’ Sophie, who loves running to and fro on our walks, dancing in the kitchen, her tail-wagging in joy.

Being a busy teacher, mother and wife made finding time to write a challenge. When I started my first novel, there was no space in our little home to write except at the kitchen table. I diligently carved out time on the weekends and eventually took my laptop to coffee shops and writers’ groups to finish it.

When writing, I let the story and characters come to me in their own time, in their own way. I am inspired by music and art, which often influence a scene or a conversation in my stories. I hope my writing inspires others and makes people think and feel. And of course be entertained.

I am working on my next novel, also about a work of art, this time a painting at the Museum of Modern Art in Rome.

LYNETTE ENDICOTT

Adjusted HeadshotLynette Endicott grew up in Illinois, met her husband in Western Nebraska, lived 25 years in Kansas where their daughter was born, and has been in Fresno, California since 2000. She has a son-in-law (who lives with her daughter nearby), and has rescued a dog, a bird and three cats. She and Ollie, her terrier mix, volunteer as a team at the local library, where children read to the dog.

At a youth camp when she was 14 the editor and teacher of a writing class challenged her to submit something to his youth magazine. She did and it was the first of 10 articles and stories accepted by the publication over the next few years.

Nothing like front end success to keep her writing! Lynette enjoys reading contemporary romance and speculative fiction and writes both. Her debut book, Starting Over Book One: More Than A Job, and two more books in that series, The Return of Joy and Finding Her Voice are available now. The first three of the Time After Time Saga with Tami Dee are available now, including Animal Instinct, Survival Instinct and Pioneer Instinct. The fourth in the series of six, Protective Instinct, will release in August 2014.

Because she didn’t have pets until after her 50th birthday the animals she enjoys find their way into all her books. Usually you will also find a character with a disability as part of the day to day fabric of the story. In More Than A Job, Paige works in services to people with disabilities until she loses her job and starts over. In The Return of Joy, Atlas, the yellow lab, becomes a Therapy Dog. In the Time After Time series animal helpers assist the hero and heroine in all six of the books in the series.

DEBRA PARMLEY

Adjusted Headshot

Debra is a multi genre author born in Columbus, Ohio and raised in Springfield, OH. She has lived just outside Memphis, TN since 1997. Debra attended Marywood University in Scranton, PA and was the first student to win first place in two categories of the Delta Epsilon Sigma Beta Epsilon Chapter writing competition, in creative prose and in informal expository. Her poetry was published in literary journals while attending college. She holds a BA in English Literature. When she graduated she asked her academic advisors which genre she should concentrate on. None of them would advise her because she showed strength in each area. Advice at the time and for many years afterward was to concentrate in one area and to focus on one genre. But only she could decide which one.

In 2012, Debra decided this was not working for her and forged her own path. This meant writing in more than one genre and working on more than one manuscript. She no longer believes in writers block. She believes in finding joy in the act of writing and in allowing her muse to play. For Debra, writing is about joy.

Today she teaches Creative Writing classes locally, passing on what she has learned and finding the joy in teaching as well.

Debra traveled and worked as an independent travel consultant. She has visited thirteen countries. She has worked in banking, newspaper advertising, as recycling cocoordinator for the City of Bartlett, as an office manager, and as a belly dance instructor.

When not writing, Debra enjoys dancing, history, primitive archery and medieval reenactment, travel, yoga and meditation.

It is one of her greatest pleasures to hear from her readers.

A native of Florida with a love of New Orleans, she has the uncanny ability to find humor in most things and would probably kill a plastic plant. She knows this because she’s killed bamboo. Twice. As a result, she’s not allowed to walk in the gardening department of any store without supervision. She’s also not allowed in the card aisle of any grocery without an escort since she’ll spend thirty minutes opening cards and laughing for no good reason. She continues to make her home in Florida in spite of the heat and mosquitos and shares her home with two cats. One of them smart, the other not so much.

ANGELA KNIGHT

Adjusted Headshot

I have been writing erotic romance since 1996, when my first novella appeared in Secrets Vol. 2. In June, 2004, Jane’s Warlord, my first novel, was published, followed by FOREVER KISS in July, 2004 the anthology HOT BLOODED in September, and MASTER OF THE NIGHT in October. MASTER OF THE MOON, my next book, hit the USA Today list for three weeks, much to my amazement. Since then I’ve been writing like a lunatic and having a wonderful time.

I’ve been married to a wonderful man for more than twenty years now. He’s a senior investigator with our county sheriff’s office. As a result, I know an awful lot of cops, which is one reason I love putting police procedural elements in my fiction. I also spent ten years as a reporter, which gave me a collection of war stories you would not believe.

My husband Mike and I have one son, Anthony, who is in his twenties now.

Review: Tahoe Blues by Aubree Lane

Wow, I am SUPER late putting up a review for this book thanks to my keyboard malfunction, but I had it done so I’m posting it now.  I have so much writing to do I don’t know if I even remember all that I read during my down time.  In any case, on to the review!

tahoebluesAmazon:  Tahoe Blues

Synopsis from Smashwords:

When Cara Lee Greene finds that the glitz and glitter of casino life isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be, she divorces the Lake’s self-proclaimed King of Tahoe and tries to separate herself from the rich and powerful Alexander family.

In her quest for a new life, Cara is able to reconnect with some old friends. She finds a new home, a new love and a new piece of jewelry around her ankle. Under house arrest and accused of a crime she didn’t commit, Cara must rely on a funky group of misfits to uncover the truth and set her free.

Believing himself above society’s morays, Duncan Alexander doesn’t know what he has until his beautiful college professor wife walks in and finds him in bed with another woman. Losing Cara is not an option and Duncan will do anything to get her back.

With a family whose wealth was built on profiteering during the Prohibitions years, Duncan is not above doing what he deems necessary to retrieve his Queen. His family sits on the side-lines. They have given Duncan free reign, but in the end will Duncan be able to retain his throne?

Review:

I – and 9 other members of Lane’s Lunatics – was asked to read an ARC version of this book to post a review on it’s publication date (which may be a few days late as the poor editor had a medical mishap), so my copy was free, but my review is 100% my own opinion.

To begin with, the plot twists and turns in this book were completely unexpected. Everyone – and I do mean everyone – expects it to be the ex-husband. However, that isn’t the whole story by a long shot. There are so many U-turns in this book it blew my mind, and that’s what kept me reading it.

I’m a rough reviewer sometimes – sorry Aubree! – but I honestly didn’t like Cara too much. Keep in mind this might be fixed in the published copy, but Cara went irrational at the oddest times to me. I honestly thought she should have gotten irrational over some of the confrontations, and THEN thought through what the other party had said. Yet, she was almost self-reflective even when she shouldn’t have been at that stage yet. Also, the fact she didn’t notice Tanner’s hotness until he was in a tux at a fancy gala was a point against her to me. However, she did mention she thought she might have gotten snobby because of that too.

Tanner I did like, although I felt he should have played a tad more of role in the whole plot than ‘new boyfriend’ role he seemed to be stuck with. Although he had a tons going in his favor in trying to let Cara handle her problems without going alpha “I’ll fix everything for you, little lady” on her, which was very realistic for how I’d want to be treated in real life. In novels, I might have wished a tad more alpha into him.

Overall, good read! It might have been a better read for me if I had liked Cara more and there was a tad too much explanations of their thought processes, but with the complete surprises this book kept throwing at you,  Honestly, while I had character issues, Aubree was a master at keeping me guessing! it’s well worth the read! 3.5 stars!
