Rene Folsom, author of paranormal romance and erotica, lives in Florida with her husband and three kids. She has officially diagnosed herself with creative ADD and often has a million and one writing projects going at once. In addition to writing, she is also a graphic artist who enjoys creating custom book covers for indie authors. She is definitely an artist at heart and would love nothing more than to be elbow deep in clay during her waking hours.

Rene believes that all fiction is based on some form of reality—otherwise we would never have the inspiration or knowledge to dream up the realistic situations we portray with our words. She is proud to say that her personal experiences have been inspirational, though perhaps not always identical to that of her fictional characters. Where reality and fantasy diverge, however, must remain her little secret…

Review: The Edge Series by Ilona Andrews

From Ilona Andrews Website:

It’s a very odd story of a very odd place.  The Edge lies between worlds, on the border between the Broken, where people shop at Walmart and magic is a fairytale–and the Weird, where blueblood aristocrats rule, changelings roam, and the strength of your magic can change your destiny.  It’s a place where poverty is real, life is hard, and fairy tales sometimes do come true.

This series came into being accidentally.  I’d written a novella of the Edge, planning to put it on the website as a freebie.  Jeaniene Frost happened to read it, and proceeded to call me and threaten me with the bodily harm unless I turned it into a full length book.

The first draft of the first book, ON THE EDGE, was written approximately two months in between Kate books and I loved working on it. The first hint of trouble came when Gordon edited it and took to calling it “rustic fantasy” as opposed to urban fantasy.

When I showed to our agent, she loved it, but she wasn’t quite sure what it was. Then our editor at Ace, Anne Sowards, looked at it. She called back next day saying that she wasn’t quite sure what it was, but she wanted to buy it. The art department was excited about the idea (and made the fantastic cover, which I love to death and it’s my precious) but they also weren’t quite sure how to classify it.

A few days before the first book came out, a prominent reviewer emailed me to say that she enjoyed the book a great deal but wasn’t sure how to classify it either.

I now present the unclassifiable ON THE EDGE. It’s like Twinkies. Everybody likes it, nobody is 100% sure what it is.

The series is now complete at four books.

(Personally, I’d classify these as more Rustic Romantic Fantasy)

ontheedgecoverOn the Edge (The Edge 1.0)

Rose and Declan’s story. Rose is a young woman raising her two young brothers – a changeling and a necromancer – alone. Her mother died while she was younger and her father took off shortly after she turned 18. Since then, she’s taken responsibility for those two boys and worked below minimum wage jobs in the Broken – the world without magic – while they lived in the Edge – the boundary between the Broken and the Weird – the world full of magic.

The Edgers are a paranoid, hill-billy type bunch, with each family out for themselves. Into that mess walks Declan, a blueblood from the Weird, with mysterious reasons for traveling there and for courting Rose. Rose is one of the rare Edgers whose flash is white (an indication of power) and she is more than capable of looking out for herself. Until a hideous being takes up residence nearby and threatens to destroy the Edge and possibly the Weird itself. Since she must protect her brothers and as many Edgers as they can, they finally accept the blueblood’s aid, and a slow love blossoms.

What I really like about this story – besides Rose and the hotness of Declan of course – is the details, the craziness, the absolute hilarity that happens amidst the really stomach-turning horrors these authors have their villains envision. It’s awe-inspiring how depraved the ‘bad guy’ can be in an Ilona Andrews book. Luckily, you don’t get gory details too often, but they do not pull any punches on what the evil SOB will do to people, animals, the world… Ilona Andrews (one or both of them) have a twisted imagination and I love it!

Also, while the romance between Rose and Declan was slow to start, it was sweet to read. Though to be honest, this one isn’t my favorite Edge novel. It felt a little too drawn out with the whole Rose and Declan thing – although their interruptions were just freaking classic!  4 stars!

bayoumooncoverBayou Moon (The Edge 2.0)

William and Cerise’s story. Cerise is from a place in the Edge called the Mire (think Louisiana swamp here, except with horrors instead of just alligators). Her parents get kidnapped by the Weird’s Louisiana’s secret police, the Hand. On her travels, she meets the changeling William who has been dispatched by the Mirror – another secret police whose country opposes the Hand – and sparks fly. After she changes out of her disguise, anyway.

Again, the horrors the villains come up with and how they’re even shaped are awe-inspiring in their absolute ability to create nightmares. The details the Andrews endow these villains with really do amaze me.

I loved William and Cerise’s love story a lot more than Rose and Declan’s, simply because it was more passionate. Especially from William’s point of view. I would probably give my left arm for a man to look at me like he looked at Cerise the first time she was clean. Seriously. Then I’d run.

Another thing I love about the story itself is that Ilona Andrews does not shy away from painful events in their stories. People will die. Some get broken. Things happen, just as they do in real life, and it changes them. Despite the fantasy-like setting, that was superbly realistic and adds depth to this already intricate world.

This has to be my favorite of the four novels I think. 5 stars!!

fatesedgecoverFate’s Edge (The Edge 3.0)

Kaldar and Audrey’s story. Kaldar Mar, from the previous Edge book regarding the battle with Spider and the Hand, and Audrey, a woman from a family of con men who would only like to get out of that life. After a moment of heartbreaking stupidity, her life is turned upside down and the world is once again in peril and Kaldar – a trickster and a con in his own right – must work with the best lock-pick he’s ever met, who’s hot to boot. Sparks fly and you get the idea.

I don’t know who I would have pictured for Kaldar, but once I read how Audrey interacted with him, I realized they were absolutely perfect for each other. Neither one of them could fool the other, and that only made them hotter for each other.

As usual, the Hand horrors dogged their steps, causing death of people close to them, and together they must find and keep a sacred object from those monsters. Led by none-other than Spider’s niece.

Again, the horrors the Hand (or Hound in this case) are willing to do are horrendous, but because they are bad guys, it’s necessary. I actually like novels that add some realism to their villains, so rather than simply “I want to take over the world” it is instead “I’ll take over the world and slaughter and eat people who stand in my way.” Much more satisfying when they go down.

Kaldar is honestly more likable in this book than in the previous, though I would have throttled George and Jack for the crap they pulled, and thrown Gaston under a train as well. Then again, I’m an aunt who really dislikes when kids don’t listen to the important “NO” you give them. And Jack’s lack of trying did get on my nerves a lot, but that really was the point.

All in all, a great novel. This series gets better with each installment practically! 4.5 stars!

steelsedgecoverSteel’s Edge (The Edge 4.0)

Richard and Charlotte’s story.  Richard Mar was first introduced in the second Edge novel and he, like his brother Kaldar, has a vendetta he chose to pursue.  Except Richard felt anger towards Slavers for what they did to Lark years ago that had so damaged her.  And part his anger was for himself for failing to protect her or save her sooner.  Charlotte is a healer who fled to the Edge from the Weird because of her own demons and when slavers end up killing someone close to her, she also has a score to settle with them.  Thus Richard and Charlotte team up and of course, fall in love.

I’ll say wow again here. I’m going to start off with the characters first. In the second Edge novel, Richard wasn’t really on my radar as a guy to like or dislike, too controlled, I guess with too little presence. However, he decided to take on the entire slave trade and that made him interesting. Throw in a healer who is fighting her darker side, but who is unmistakably a lady of fine breeding, and they are a good match.

I loved how Ilona Andrews was able to make it so that one could be a healer but they had the ability to cause great, great harm as well. It happens in a lot of novels with healers of course, but not to this extent. It was nicely done and I loved that detail. Charlotte could be a walking catastrophe of epic proportions and Richard wants her in the worst way. It was glorious. The romance was nice.

Again, the world of the slave trade and the machinations of those behind it were well thought out and executed nicely within the plot. I was seriously impressed. For character development, plot, and of course romance, I’m giving this one 4.5 stars as well.

Ilona Andrews does what few authors can accomplish in one novel. I seriously recommend reading anything by them.

However, so far, my favorite from them is the Kate Daniels series. Kate and Curran are absolutely psychotic, but they really do love each other and it’s the best dysfunctional relationship on the planet. I’m off to finish rereading that series now!

That review will be next from my personal reading list (not to be confused with the blog tour reading list and the yet another list: the requested reviews reading list).

About the Authors

Ilona Andrews is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. author2smIlona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.)

Gordon and Ilona currently reside in Texas with their two children, and many dogs and cats. They have co-authored two series, the bestselling urban fantasy of Kate Daniels and romantic urban fantasy of The Edge.

Spotlight & Review: Evolution of Sam by Cassidy K. O’Connor

Sam Dalton is a confirmed bachelor with few attachments in this world until he meets Keara. New to his building she slowly takes over his every waking thought. Has he finally found the one who can tame him into submission?

Keara is the newest member of the Laochra Gra, a clan of faery women whose mission is to save mortal men from the Lianhan Shee by uniting them with their Soul Mates. Are her newly acquired powers strong enough to teach him the art of pleasuring a woman and preparing him for his soul mate?

Excerpt 18 and up Only

I wake up and my first thought is of her. We had so much fun at the party last night and I was really hoping to get lucky, but I came home alone. She is quickly becoming an addiction for me. I can’t wait to see her again. I can’t go empty handed, so I run down the block to the bakery. I pick up a couple of cinnamon rolls, croissants, bagels and since I don’t know what she drinks I grab a coffee, tea, and a hot chocolate. I rush back to the building praying the whole time she’s there. I knock and hear her call out she’ll be right there. I wait patiently and get rewarded when she opens the door. She’s only wearing an Emerald green robe that matches her eyes perfectly. I wish I had woken up next to her this morning to see if she always looks this perfect.

Good morning Sam, have you brought me another present?”

I wasn’t sure what you liked so I brought you one of everything”

That is very sweet of you, this pleases me very much. Come in and make yourself comfortable”

Wow, how to start this.  So basically this is a modern tale of historic Irish lore regarding the Fae.  Fae who are sent to seduce men to protect them, even.  Quite a unique little premise for me anyway and I liked the idea at the same time as a little leery of it at first.  I mean sometimes these ideas turn out badly.

However, I was very pleasantly surprised by this novella.  I was sort of bummed with how short it was but it was very well done, especially for a debut novel and even more especially for erotica.  The characters were as developed as they could be in the short length of the novel.  I will admit something here:  I don’t USUALLY enjoy BDSM where the woman is the ‘dom’.  I don’t know, just don’t.  But this was a bit of light BDSM and the roles of Keara and Sam didn’t bother me much.

I did however like Keara.  She’s a great character and despite the fact she’s Fae you can really relate to her.  I’m not quite as fond of Sam as I am Keara, but I don’t suppose that matters as Keara is really the ‘main’ character in the series.

I would definitely recommend this to any erotica and/or Fae fans.  It’s a great read with great characters and a good plot, even despite it’s length.  A 4 star read!

The Pros and Cons of Writing Erotica

I was sixteen and a virgin when I wrote my first erotic story. By today’s standards it probably wasn’t as steamy as the ones you can find out there now. I don’t think I ever expected to stay in this genre; it was just a natural fit. I have a naturally high libido and my imagination is quite active when it comes to sex, why not use that to entertain others in a legal way?

The best part about writing erotica is hearing back from readers on how they learned something new or that they were inspired to try something from my books. Sex can be one of the most liberating acts a woman can participate in. I always write my female characters to be sexually confident and often the aggressor once they are in bed. My first book even had light BDSM in it with the female being the dom role. I was surprised to get feedback from readers that this was rare and a nice change of pace. It never dawned on me that this is less often seen. I believe if more women took control of their sex life they would be a lot happier.

No matter how happily married you may be it is still tough to keep romance alive in your relationship. If you have kids it is especially difficult to find a time where both you and your partner have enough energy to be intimate. There are some nights my husband will crawl into bed and reach over to cop a feel then announce that’s all he has in him. Reading erotic romance can help smooth over these rough hectic patches and help give you those endorphins you are desperately in need of.

There are a couple of drawbacks to this genre as well; the sheer number of books out there already makes success difficult. There are at least a thousand books out there for every kind of fetish. Getting yours noticed is a daily struggle, I spend hours on Facebook just trying to interact with people and get my name out there. I have been truly lucky to meet a lot of amazing people while on this endeavor though, people I would have never met otherwise.

Now for the biggest con of all…desire, I spend many hours panting over my keyboard. Sometimes I spend days writing and rewriting a sex scene which never fails to get me all riled up. My husband can attest to how many times he has received a text from me during the day begging him to come home and take care of me! This of course has been great for our sex life, sometimes I pounce on him as soon as he walks in the door.

Romance readers are the most passionate, friendly, supportive people I have ever met. I will gladly suffer hours of sexual neediness in exchange for writing stories people can connect with and enjoy.

Why? Why the torture? Each and every single night since I became a woman I awaken sweating, panting, hot and bothered from the pure sexual torture. Many times with my hand rubbing my most intimate place. A dream, so many dreams. Each one is different, but all contain the same faceless dark haired stranger.

The only things I know for sure is he is tall, has raven black hair, the same color as mine, but much shorter. He has the most beautiful eyes I’ve ever seen. Glowing eyes that seem to be able to see into my soul. My heart’s deepest desires and he always grants them to me without pause. It was strange at first, seeing him and yet not. Not being able to make out his facial features, except for his eyes. I got used to it throughout the years, I guess. One thing I DO know, is the way he makes me feel, always!

So much passion, heat and desire. He makes me feel beautiful, irreplaceable and wanted in a way, I imagine, every woman wants to feel.

Frustration at its finest. This latest dream seemed more realistic than all of the others. I still feel the ripples on my skin from his touch; the most intimate touch I’ve ever experienced, the only touch from a male I’ve had in such a manner. The goose bumps are just starting to go away. His caress is always so sensual and arousing. My mouth is still dry from all of the panting I’ve done, my panties are drenched and my heart is still pounding.

No words could ever describe my desire to meet this man of my dreams. That is—if he truly does exist. I’m going to be 25 years old and have zero sexual experience. I’d give anything to feel even a portion of what I’ve felt during these amazingly satisfying yet torturous dreams. Anything!

When I finally do get out of bed and stroll towards the bathroom, the floors feel extra cold on my overheated feet. “Definitely starting off with a cold shower.” I turn on the water full blast cold, toss my sleep shirt and panties in the hamper and brace for the shock of cold water against my flesh. “ACK!” Holy crap does it sting. But hey, it works. My body no longer feels the intense heat of arousal, just the residual tingles left after the orgasm, still lingering along my body. I fully submerge after adding some hot water to the mix, when I hear banging on the bathroom door. I jump slightly and slip a bit, almost landing flat on my ass. Luckily, I have fast reflexes and right myself quickly.

He sighs, moving his mouth towards my ear, flicking his tongue out softly and caressing my lobe.  I shudder in response feeling flutters low in my belly.  “I don’t know if I can wait any longer to have you. I need to taste you—feel you.”  Oh my, did my panties just get wet? “Yes!” I say with a heavenly sigh. “Please,” I answer as if he’s offering food while I’ve been starving for days. He uses his tongue superbly to lick all the way down along the column of my throat.

Sensuously, he places precise kisses all the way back up, until he hovers over my lips, looking hungrily into my eyes. “I’m going to kiss you now, Wunder. Then, I’m going to take you and make you mine. If you don’t want that? Now, would be the time to tell me.”  I’m swaying on my feet, gazing into his eyes—at a loss for words.

Finally, I find my voice. “Please.”  He takes my mouth with such fervor, my heart pounds harder than after I’ve just run for miles. My legs now feel like over cooked noodles. He holds me tighter, exploring every nook and cranny of my mouth and I answer with the same exploration. He’s making silent promises, grinding his hard length, against my body. I bravely slide my hand from around his neck, down between us, past his chest to cup him through his tight jeans.  He groans into my mouth and slowly pulls back to gaze at me questionably. My eyes are still at half-mast, drooping as if they would close on their own accord. I give his jean encased cock a firm squeeze, ‘Yes’ in answer to his question.  He takes my hand, tugging it as he moves toward the back of the club. I go willingly. Oh—how I go willingly!

I fall into a slow jog beside Pete, heading the opposite way we came in. I have no idea where we are or where we’re going, so I figure it’s best to find out…“Where are we going?”

“Right now, we’re going to try and intercept whatever is coming this way. The vibe is growing stronger in this direction. Do you think you can handle it?”

“Of course I can. You should know better than to ask me that. But won’t I be seen in here. Won’t you and dad get—hold on a sec. We don’t even know what it is!”

“Trust me Wunder, I know this place like the back of my hand even after only a few months and I also have the cameras handled. No one will see us as long as we stay away from the research sector right now. That’s where they keep most of the infected and do all the tests for cures and such. I didn’t dare touch those cameras. I don’t need to. I only blocked out the ones closest to us. There’s a lot more cameras where we’re headed though. Give me a sec.” He points a finger to his temple, gives me a small smile, then he takes a deep breath and seems to briefly lose focus. His eyes give a quick flash of a green eerie glow.

Just like mine do when my emotions are out of whack. I’m fucking confused! What the hell is going on? More damn questions and no time to ask them. Figures, I have the best of luck with everything, don’t I?

I had my eyes squeezed closed as I screamed bloody murder. My father ran straight over to me telling me to continue to keep my eyes closed. Of course I didn’t listen. I stood there and watch as he grabbed the infected’s hair, carefully removed the bastard’s teeth from my arm and stuck the dagger straight through his head via the fucker’s ear.          The sounds were sickly. I dreamt of that night for years. I was a bit haunted by it, but also fascinated. It was then I decided I did not want a mellow life or job. I wanted to be just like my Dad. A kick ass soldier of good. Well that’s what I thought of him then, so it’s what I went with. I don’t think I was ever far off. These infected are not good news in any way, shape or form and my father, as well as the others he worked with. Fought the bad guys, killed them and helped to slow down the spread of the infection in the area. He, and the others, are heroes in my eyes. Always were and always will be.
Once the infected proved truly dead on the spot, my dad freaked out. He thought he was going to lose me. But he was wrong…

Wunder Series - Teaser 2Review

Wunder Vol. 1 was an absolutely delightful surprise.  I mean whenever anyone thinks of zombies, sexy is NOT in the description.  Heck, sex and zombies is actually quite repulsive to think about, no?  So I was quite curious about this story.  I couldn’t imagine how one pulled this off.

Since this is spoiler free (and there are blurbs everywhere in this post), I’m just going to say, Oh my freaking GOD, wow!  It actually worked!  I wasn’t disgusted or eeked out or anything.  I loved Wunder, she was such a strong character and you could relate to her fairly easily.  As for Pete, despite the name I am not fond of, he’s a great guy that you just can’t help but find yummy when the sparks start flying.  Both characters make this book exactly what it is.  Great!

The plot wasn’t anything to sneeze at either.  I mean yeah, some things I saw coming miles away and others took me by surprise, but it all fit together nicely with the two main protagonists and didn’t feel forced or full of holes.  So nicely done there.

The only negative to the whole vol. 1 was I felt the writing style could have been more polished or better edited or something.  It just felt awkward or young in some places for me.  It didn’t detract from the overall story enough to make me put it down though!

So all in all, I’d give this book a solid 4 stars.  Great job, V.R. Von!!

Wunder Series - Guest Post Photo 1

What are they? Well, they’re the walking dead, duh! Seriously though, the zombies (aka the infected) in Wunder have been terrorizing the planet for over 30 years. They are gruesome, strong, and much faster than the average zombie you see on television. They are also a lot smarter. They know how to trap their prey and the best way to get them down for the kill. They crave protein due to its ability to strengthen their muscles and improve their physical condition. So, when they attack their prey (humans), they start off with consuming whatever blood they can get and work their way deep, to get to the marrow of their prey’s bones.

The origin of the contagion is not yet known, but it is under constant investigation. Some say it is alien based, something that was brought to the planet by other worldly beings with hopes all humans would die and the aliens would take over, live and flourish as if we were never here. That’s not yet been proven.

Others say, that it was created as a biochemical weapon from one of Russia’s or Korea’s mad scientists that are out for destruction of anywhere but their country, so they can have all control. But those theories are… Just theories, nuff said.

One thing we do know for sure is Wunder is a rarity. How many people do you know that can actually say they are part zombie? Exactly! NONE.

She now fights alongside some others, to help all that are terrorized by the infected to stay alive and uninfected. She doesn’t see them as kin or anything of the like. She sees them as enemies, targets, needing to just be…gone. And that’s what she’s trained to do for a majority of her life. Taught by her 100% human father and his comrades. Kill or be killed!

Review: Cursed by Jennifer L. Armentrout

cursedcoverDying Sucks…

and high school senior Ember McWilliams knows firsthand. After a fatal car accident, her gifted little sister brought her back. Now anything Ember touches dies. And that, well, really blows.

Ember operates on a no-touch policy with all living things–including boys. When Hayden Cromwell shows up, quoting Oscar Wilde and claiming her curse is a gift, she thinks he’s a crazed cutie. But when he tells her he can help control it, she’s more than interested. There’s just one catch: Ember has to trust Hayden’s adopted father, a man she’s sure has sinister reasons for collecting children whose abilities even weird her out. However, she’s willing to do anything to hold her sister’s hand again. And hell, she’d also like to be able to kiss Hayden. Who wouldn’t?

But when Ember learns the accident that turned her into a freak may not’ve been an accident at all, she’s not sure who to trust. Someone wanted her dead, and the closer she gets to the truth, the closer she is to losing not only her heart, but her life.

For real this time.

I found the blurb interesting and thought I’d pick it up. This is a stand-alone novel written by one of my favorite authors.  As usual, the character development was amazing and the author really does get into different people’s motivations very well. While this is a YA paranormal romance, it isn’t part of a series, and I think it should stay that way, personally. I didn’t get into Hayden as much as some of JLArmentrout’s other boys, but he’s a decent enough type of guy.  Ember was as usual easy to relate to and get into and I really did like her.  Yet she isn’t like a super awesome character like Kat in the Lux series.

What sets this novel apart really is that there is a lot more mystery in it. It’s a bit of a who-dun-it type novel regarding to certain aspects of Ember’s past – or rather her death. Although, I kind of did see the villain coming a mile away.  I really can’t wax poetically about the plot or characters.

So overall, a decent read, but nothing I’d write home about or give fangirl squeals over. I recommend this to any JLArmentrout fan as we all like to read her, but otherwise, it’s a decent read if you want to pick it up.  Don’t expect the usual brilliance though.  I rate it 3.5 stars!

Review: The Dark Elements Series by Jennifer L. Armentrout

I usually try to wait for a few novels of a series to come out before I start them. Mostly, because I am an impatient girl. However, I was in a YA mood after rereading Lux and Covenant series and I do adore JLA, so off I went.

I am so incredibly glad I did. A nice little war between gargoyles – or Wardens as they call themselves – and demons. What could be better? And the main character, a girl who is half-Warden and half-demon and wham, you’re in for some fun. This series is also a YA paranormal romance and I have to say, I was excited to start it.

bittersweetlovecoverBitter Sweet Love (Dark Elements prequel 0.5)

This is the story of Jasmine and Dez, before the start of the main series. You even get to meet the main protagonists in this novel, although they are much younger.

I think this story is set up as a way of explaining a lot of Warden-type traditions and rules within their mating and romance areas before the main show begins. Or at least that’s how it felt to me. However, the emotions behind each of the main characters here, plus Jasmine’s sister, seemed very real and potent to the reader. It definitely wasn’t a filler read. The world Jennifer L. Armentrout is creating this time is as in-depth as her Lux and Covenant universes and I can’t wait to see where it goes. The prequel didn’t impress me that much though, but I do like Dez and Jasmine well enough. Maybe it was because I knew it was only a prequel to the actual real protagonists of the series which put me off.  I read this one first, so maybe it should be read in another order.  So my rating is 3.5 stars.  Sorry JLArmentrout!

One kiss could be the last.

Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she’s anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.

Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she’s crushed on since forever.

Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she’s not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn’t an issue, considering Roth has no soul.

But when Layla discovers she’s the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne…it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world

I’m going to go a girly squeal of happiness because I absolutely, completely, totally (yes I am being redundant) LOVE Roth. I just do. He’s great. He’s hot. He pops up out of no where, talks Layla into doing crazy things, and he likes her. What’s not to like about the beginning of this series?

Well okay, I do have one peeve. It’s the age of Roth. JLA explains it and everything within the novel, but honestly… eh, I’d have preferred a more traditional, “he’s been around since demons were created” type story. However, I can overlook that with the awesomeness of this novel.

Firstly, the world JLArmentrout created with the Wardens and demons was nicely done. I have my own theories on them and the Alphas and what exactly is the reasoning behind it, but I won’t share. That would involve spoilers of what was explained in the novel and I honestly try to avoid those in reviews. In the beginning, Wardens equaled the good guys, and demons were all evil. By the end of the novel, you knew not everything was what is seemed, although not nearly enough was explained. Hence, I’m holding my breath for the next novel.

Secondly, the characters are as always diverse and realistic. Layla with her issues of belonging because of her heritage, yet her strength in not giving into most of her self-doubts. Roth, well he’s a little hard to read sometimes, but he’s great. And the fact he hums Guns N Roses makes me grin. (I’m a Guns N Roses fan, it’s my decade, so yeah, I LOVE it!)  Of course, Zayne is a sweetheart, but I was so angry with him in this novel. Layla has it so hard and to go and do some of the absentminded things he did…. Wow. And of course Dez and Jasmine as well as their twins were here, plus Jasmine’s sister. The patriarch of the clan, some dissenters who hate Layla’s very presence, and add in an evil bad-guy hunting for Layla and the action and drama never stop!

Lastly, the story was wonderfully done in that it gave you enough to explain what was going on, yet kept some things from the reader so you have more to learn next time. Nice balancing, that. All in all, 5 stars!

The Covenant Series by Jennifer L. Armentrout

After finishing the Lux series (and it’s newest release), I just had to reread this series. For those who didn’t read my post on the Lux series, I will once again state that I am not a huge fan of Young Adult type novels, although I have read and enjoyed them. While this one doesn’t deal with aliens like the previous series I reviewed, it does deal with deities – and their demigod children and THEIR children, etc. I’m more open to deities and such in my paranormal novels than aliens, YET I loved the Lux series just slightly better. Odd, isn’t it?

From the short synopsis of book one: The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi–pure bloods–have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals–well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures. Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden.

That is the world in which the series starts. It’s a YA paranormal series told from a young half-blood girl’s point of view, and her struggles within the system and without it as it crumbles.

Before I get started on the individual reviews, I just wanted to say the series overall was another ‘stay up too late to just finish one more chapter’ type series. It was excellently done.

I was also excited to see this series did differ from the Lux series by adding a more serious love threat and how the two main protagonist interact. JLArmentrout is an amazingly talented writer who can vary her characters as they should be. I do not like feeling like I’m rereading the same characters acting out a different plot. You all know what I’m saying?

daimoncoverDaimon (Covenant 0.5 prequel)

The prequel to the entire Covenant series, it tells the story of what exactly happened to Alex’s mother before Aiden finds her at the beginning of the first novel.

To be honest, I read and enjoy romance more than any other major genre in novels. If it doesn’t have romance in it, I usually blah my way through the book. A fantasy novel is great, as long as the main character loves someone, doesn’t have to be in the main part of the story but it usually has to be there. This novel had none. If I remember right, there was a hint of a former crush of Alex’s before she left the Covenant, but other than that, nada. I do not count that date at the beginning of the story. The boy was weak and stupid.

Also, and while I love JLArmentrout to pieces, honestly I thought the series could have taken or left this story. It didn’t exactly add much to the story except you got a peek into Alex’s relationship with her mother before it all fell apart. While that is important, it could have also been done in the main series with memories or stories told to Alex’s best friend Caleb, or something, you know? So I wasn’t impressed by this installment.

I did only read this story after starting the series, so I guess that’s why I kept at it. So because I didn’t feel it added much to the overall series that needed to be there, but because I did like it, I’m going with 3.5 stars.

halfbloodcoverHalf-Blood (Covenant 1.0)

Alex returns to the Covenant – a special school for those training to become Sentinels – after a three year absence. She has to learn to adjust from being out among humans, reacquaint herself with old friends, fight off her attraction to her trainer, Aiden, and brave the pit of vipers that is the politics of these beings.

Without giving away too much else, I’ll simply have to say that Alex is a rash girl who does things I would have dreamed of doing, but never would have, and the forbidden attraction to Aiden makes things interesting. However, it is a little hard to figure out exactly what the man is thinking a lot of the time, but that is part of his charm. The world JLArmentrout created is detailed as well and she creates such intricate character personalities. It always leaves you guessing as to what exactly is going on. Great read! 4.5 stars!

purecoverPure (Covenant 2.0)

Wow, things get kind of heated a bit in this one. You throw in Seth, who is supposed to be Alex’s other half, yet she still loves Aiden, the forbidden one. Throw in a summons to the council and plots to destroy her because of what she is, and Alex’s life just can’t get more messed up.

I like Seth. I really do, he’s a bit of an ass, but I like my fictional men a little like that. In all honesty, it really does seem like the only person outside of himself he cares for is Alex. The different personalities that JLA can create astound me sometimes. Although I do wished Aiden and Alex’s relationship would go a bit faster, but to be honest, it was perfectly done to keep us aching for it. This is definitely another ‘stay up all night just to finish one more chapter’ type of book. 5 stars!

Burning hibiscus flowerDeity (Covenant 3.0)

So hard to do this without spoilers! I’m not doing synopsis’s of each book simply because they have minor spoilers in them, and while I personally don’t mind some spoilers, some people are fanatic about them. I simply want people to NOT tell me the major plot reveals and endings. That’s all. However, to be fair for those who wish to read it and enjoy it like I did – spoiler free – I’ll try to stay away from it.

In the previous book, Aiden does something so profound it could destroy his life if anyone ever learns of it, all to protect Alex. In this one, she’s dealing with the worry of that, the slow suspicion surrounding Seth, despite the fact she wants to believe in him. She keeps onto that hope and as well as trying to understand the difference between need and love, fate and choice. She keeps ignoring her suspicions, holding onto that deep friendship she has with Seth. Plus she has to dodge assassins from a fanatical cult bent on killing her. Oh, and keep her distance from the Pure she loves.

This is a slightly darker read, but the agony and worry really do infect the reader. Although I did want to strangle Alex a few times for purposely ignoring warning signs regarding one of the men in her life, but it is excusable once you understand it, so I’ll let that pass. Luckily for us readers, we really get to see a lot of Alex and Aiden moments, although he’s still a little difficult to read. By the end of the novel – a horrible cliffhanger – you are dying for the next one! I’m wavering between 4 and 5 stars here, so I’ll split the difference. 4.5 stars!

elixircoverElixir (Covenant 3.5)

This shorter little piece is told exclusively from Aiden St. Clair’s point of view during his desperation in trying to break the connection between his beloved Alex and Seth. He’s faced with horrible choices and it’s his struggle to find a way to help her before Apollo is forced to do something drastic.

I loved this one. I didn’t like Alex in it for obvious reasons, but the view into Aiden’s mind was a welcome one. I adored it. It needed to be told and I’m happy it did. Plus the choice he came up with in the end shows just how much he does love her, despite the taboo on their relationship. JLArmentrout does an amazing job when she finally writes from the male protagonist’s side and this just might be my favorite of all of the Covenant books. 5 stars!

apollyoncoverApollyon (Covenant 4.0)

Things really come to a head in this installment. Poor Aiden continues to suffer the abuse from Alex, all the while keeping the faith that she’ll severe the connection to Seth on her own. It’s beautiful how he feels about her in giving her that trust, even when everyone else has given up hope. Every girl’s dream.

Of course, the real battle is soon to come and Team Alex is striving to find a way to keep Seth from becoming the god-killer.

Some of the things in this novel are dark but needed. I love the dynamics between all of the characters and the twists in the plot I almost never see coming. I hate psycho-Alex, but her normal self is a strong girl whom I think most of us can relate to. Of course, my favorite god is still Apollo. He’s just great. So while this installment was as usual excellent, I didn’t enjoy it as much as the previous ones, so I give it 4 stars!!

sentinelcoverSentinel (Covenant 5.0)

The end of another great series by JLArmentrout. It always makes me sad, yet I devoured this book just like the rest. It’s filled with surprises, Alex’s trauma from the fight in the previous book, and as always, love.

I am back to liking Seth in this book, and even feel a bit for him. Aiden is of course the favorite, now that he’s a bit more open. Alex, of course, kicks ass. But you never know the way it’s going to go until the very end and after all the losses Alex has suffered, it’s amazing how strong she is. This book is a strong ending to this great series, and I couldn’t have been happier with how it turned out. Except for the deal with Seth of course… I hear a new spin-off series is coming out with Seth in it. We’ll see how that goes!

In any case, this was a strong finish, lots of emotional ups and downs and determined warriors doing their best to avert the gods’ wrath. It was lovely. 4.5 stars. Great job, JLArmentrout.
